Ed Tarlow Honored with 2017 Regional Family Business Advocacy Award by the Family Business Association

Thursday, November 30, 2017

BOSTON and CONCORD, MA, ISSUED OCTOBER 30, 2017…The Family Business Association (www.fbaedu.com) has named Boston attorney Edward Tarlow as this year’s recipient of the Regional Family Business Advocacy Award.

The award was presented at the 2017 Family Business Awards for Massachusetts, held on October 24th at the Colonnade Hotel in Boston.

Tarlow, a resident of Concord, MA and an attorney with over 50 years of experience in the practice of law, has focused on helping family-owned businesses grow and expand. To that end, he is also President and a Founding Director of the Family Business Association, a Massachusetts non-profit which was established in 2008.

Tarlow is also President of Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers, P.C., a Boston law firm. He said, “There are so many issues that family businesses must contend with – from control, governance, conflict, and succession from one generation to the next. I have always found it a fascinating area of practice.”

Further, Tarlow also said that the Family Business Association has provided the opportunity to educate family businesses through educational seminars, articles in a quarterly magazine, and a series of statewide competitions.

In announcing his selection as the winner, Attorney Catherine Watson of his firm said,” In addition to being part of his own Tarlow family, Ed has been a very important member of many people’s families over his fifty-three years in the practice of law.  He’s been an integral part in the success of countless family businesses throughout Massachusetts and New England. Ed never simply serves as the attorney – rather, like every other family business member, he is in fact whatever the family needs him to be – advisor, consultant, connector, sounding board, supporter.  Ed has advised and served family businesses throughout every point of the family business continuum – from founding, through expansion, through down turn, amidst transition, through sale, always through change and always with the perspective of knowing not only what is needed for the success of the business, but what is needed for the success of the family.”

She continued, “In addition to these moments, Ed is also the family member who is ever present when a parent or grandparent passes, when a grandchild is born, when a daughter gets married, when a son gets divorced, when a brother and sister stop speaking, when cousins want to take their parents’ business in a new and exciting direction.  Ed is that member of a family who may not share the family’s last name, but is as much a part of the intergenerational fabric of that family as the DNA that binds them.”

For Ed Tarlow, this is a first-time award for Regional Advocacy from the Family Business Association, although not his first award for excellence in serving family businesses. He is a former recipient of the Community Service Award from Smaller Business Association of New England (SBANE) and IN 2003 was designated as Estate Planner of the Year from the Boston Estate Planning Council (BEPC) and US News designated Tarlow Best Lawyer in Trust and Estates in Boston.

A native of Beverly, Tarlow initially studied chemical engineering and then transitioned into the practice of law. He taught at Suffolk University Law School and the New England School of Law. He holds a Masters of Law (Taxation) from Boston University and a J.D. from Boston College. His undergraduate degree was from Northeastern University.

“It is a great honor for me to have received this award,” said Tarlow, adding, “Family business is what my life and practice has been about.”
